FAFSA CHANGES - CLASS OF 2017

*This change will not apply to '15-'16 seniors when filling out the 2016-2017 FAFSA.
Beginning with the high school senior class of 2017, the FAFSA will go through a big change. Here's what you need to know.

1. The FAFSA will be available October 1st, rather than January 1st.

2. The form will accept "prior prior" tax information. This means for the 2017-2018 FAFSA, which is available beginning October 2016, filers may use 2015 information. No more having to wait until after filing taxes to fill out the FAFSA. See the chart below.

FAQs

What does FAFSA stand for?

Free Application for Student Aid

Which FAFSA do I fill out?

The term that your child will be enrolled in college  (e.g. 2017-2018 FAFSA for students graduating high school in 2017)

Do the FAFSA changes apply to me/my student?

The changes apply to all those who will enroll in college in the fall of 2017 and beyond.

How can I reduce my chances of being selected for verification?

The IRS data retrieval tool takes information directly from federal tax returns. Using it is the best way to verify that the information is accurate, therefore less questionable to the government.

Will the changes to the FAFSA mean a change in priority deadlines?

That has yet to be determined.

It could remain the same, or change on a school-to-school basis, or we could see a national shift to December priority deadlines.
